Preventive Foot Care for Diabetics
Serious foot
conditions, like diabetic foot ulcers, are a common problem for
those with insulin dependent diabetes, or diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes can cause nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy.
Patients who have developed neuropathy are at increased risk for
foot injuries because they have lost the ability to sense pain.
The following tips will help you prevent the development of diabetic
foot ulcers and other foot conditions.
• Keep your feet clean by washing daily with mild soap and lukewarm
water.
• Be sure to dry feet thoroughly, especially
between the toes.
• If your skin is dry, moisturize, but not between the toes.
• Check your feet daily for cuts, sores, or changes in the toenails.
• Be sure your shoes fit properly at the time of purchase so
there is no
need to "break them in".
Heelift® Bariatric Suspension Boot is designed
to reduce pressure to the foot, therefore, preventing diabetic foot
ulcers from forming. It gently cradles your lower leg and keeps your
foot elevated. If a diabetic foot ulcer has already formed, the Heelift
may be used to protect the ulcer from further irritation during the
healing process.
